Armored vehicles, generators and ammunition. Portugal to send more military aid to Ukraine
In a note sent this Friday to the media, the Ministry of National Defense stressed that sending this material brings to 532 tons the total of “military equipment, lethal and non-lethal, supplied by Portugal to Ukraine since the beginning of the aggression carried out by Russia”.
This time, Portugal will send, specifically, 14 armored personnel carriers M113, eight generators of “large capacity for the production of electricity, plus 120 mm ammunition and two tons of medical and sanitary equipment”.
In this meeting, the Minister of Defense has once again shown readiness to offer training to Ukraine with this type of tank. He also expressed the readiness, on the part of the Portuguese Government, to identify “ways of supporting Ukraine with this capacity”, in a coordinated manner with the partners.
Still in the same note, the Ministry of Defense indicates that Portugal is part of the new European Union military assistance mission to Ukraine, “which will provide training in areas such as the disposal of explosive devices, medical assistance in combat, nuclear, biological, chemical and radiological defense, and military training”.
“Portuguese trainers will be waiting in Germany from February“, adds the Friendly Ministry by Helena Carreiras.
Finally, Portugal reinforces its availability to receive 40 Ukrainian soldiers wounded in combat at the Armed Forces Hospital.
Regarding the aid granted at the end of almost a year of war, the Portuguese Government recalls that, throughout 2022, “weapons and ammunition, personal protection and communications equipment, armored personnel carriers and surveillance unmanned aerial vehicles, medical and sanitary equipment, and combat first aid kits”.
At the Contact Group meeting, which took place this Friday in Ramstein, Germany, Minister Helena Carreiras reaffirmed, before partners and allies, “Portugal’s commitment to defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and integrity“.
The note also indicates that the Ministry of National Defense and the General Staff of the Armed Forces are “in constant contact with the Ukrainian authorities” and are analyzing “Kiev’s requests”, looking for the correspondent “to the extent of their capabilities and availability “.
