the Minister of Transport Clément Beaune, does not want them to be banned
While the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, calls for a referendum on the future of self-service electric scooters in the capital, Clément Beaune announces a floor on a regulatory plan.
“I believe outright bans are simplistic solutions“, he said on France 2, when asked about the initiative of the mayor (PS) of Paris Anne Hidalgo, who wants to organize a referendum on the banning of self-service electric scooters in the capital on April 2. “I believe that a ban would destroy a mode of transport which can be ecological, which can be a solution in large cities“, he insisted.
The Minister of Transport and deputy for the 7th constituency of Paris has announced that he has worked on a regulatory plan at the national level, indicating that he would meet with the associations concerned.in the next weeks“. He wants more controls and “precautionary measures”.
If he refused to comment on the obligation to wear a helmet, Clément Beaune indicated that “it’s one of the tracks we’re looking at“.
A decree of October 2019 already regulates the use of electric scooters. In particular, it fixes:
- a minimum age of 12 years,
- limit their speed to 25 km/h,
- prohibits traffic on the sidewalks (except local exceptions);
- prohibits multiple use,
- requires scooters to be equipped with front and rear position lights, reflectors, a braking system and a buzzer.
As with other vehicles, it is forbidden to make phone calls or wear headphones while driving.
For his part, the mayor of Paris wants the establishment by summer of “a street code” to pacify the streets of the capital.
