“Prague has once again responsibly prepared aid for homeless people, thus protecting their health and lives from freezing. We have entrusted the Center for Social Services Prague with the organization of winter measures, the city police, medical rescue service, Metropolitan Health Service, non-profit organizations and other entities are involved in the cooperation,” says Alice Mezková, who manages the Department of Social Affairs of the City Hall of the City of Prague.
The Prague Social Services Center coordinates winter humanitarian measures through the CSSP Dispatch, which provides social services to homeless people 24/7, connects organizations and institutions involved in the system of winter measures, and records the needs and capacity of individual facilities. The website bezdomova.eu has been in operation for more than a year and contains instructions for the general public as well as professionals on how to provide assistance to homeless people.
Annual winter measures taken to enable homeless people to survive the freezing days and especially the nights in the conditions. Their implementation would not be possible without support and cooperation with social service providers and other interested organizations and institutions. Only in this way is it possible to ensure the greatest possible protection of the health or lives of homeless people in the territory of the capital. In addition to the Center Praha, which annually organizes a winter humanitarian charity beyond normal social services, the organizations Naděje, Salvation Army, Jako doma, Archdiocese charity, Parish charity Prague 1, Sananim, Drop In, and Progressive are directly involved in their implementation. The Municipal Police will continue to cooperate on winter humanitarian measures. m of Prague, Medical rescue service hl. m of Prague, Hygienic station hl. m of Prague, Anti-alcohol detention station, Municipal Polyclinic Prague, curators of the City of Prague and other institutions…
“Since the beginning of winter, we have seen that there are more people on the streets than last year, in connection with the energy crisis and extremely high inflation. We give out much more food for the needy and we see that people who work but no longer have enough money to provide for basic needs, including housing, come for it. We are already preparing another increase in bed capacity for January, we must be ready. Experience from last year shows that more and more people come for help even during the winter, when our capacity is already close to full,” said Martin Šimáček, director of the Center for Social Services Prague. “I would like the citizens of Prague to be attentive to homeless people in winter and not be afraid to approach them if they need help. They can thus save a human life if they meet someone who needs emergency medical help from the emergency services. On our website bezdomova.eu they will find instructions on how to proceed in such a situation,” said Šimáček.
The basic recommendation remains that citizens who meet a homeless person should approach that person and find out if they need help. In case of danger to life or health, we ask them to call the emergency service at number 155.
