Tourist car driver caught stealing from Monaco car park
He distributed the items in court, saying he just wanted to keep them safe from prowlers.
The case tried before the Monaco criminal court on Tuesday December 6 dates back to 2019, and the loot had still not been returned to its owner.
The defendant, a man of French nationality who is approaching his fifties, is suspected of having stolen a two-wheeler helmet, gloves, a Louis Vuitton brand key ring and a garage beeper in Monaco. The CCTV images are evocative: he is seen around noon, parking fishermen at the wheel of a tourist car. He parks next to the two-wheeler in question and helps himself, before returning to the bus.
Following the complaint filed by the victim, the man from Ajaccio is heard by the police. “You have denied the facts”the President asks him after reading the file. “That day, I was expecting clients that I had dropped off. In the meantime, many other cars have arrived. I noticed that there were keys on the ignition of the two-wheeler. I went to remove them and the saddle opened”, explains the father of 3 children – currently looking for a job – at the helm. He also specifies that he approached the guard to entrust the objects, but according to his words, the latter would not have wanted them, which would have forced him to deposit them in the hold of the bus, then in the offices of the company that employed him.
“It’s a misunderstanding, total confusion, hammers the defendant, I don’t even have a two-wheeler. J‘I took these objects out of kindness”. But given his criminal record, difficult to convince the court. Indeed, two convictions appearing in his French record: one for degradation and another… for theft.
The Prosecutor stands up: “This is the first time someone has done this to me”he smiled nervously, pointing to the bag containing the concealed items. “Why didn’t you take them to the police? »ask the Public Prosecutor. “What you told law enforcement does not match the CCTV footage”he adds, addressing the defendant. “I feel like I’m dealing with someone who has committed an offense and who, a few years later, is reinventing history. For this I require 2 months suspended prison sentence..
After deliberation, the court will be more lenient and sentence the man to 15 days in prison, suspended.
