Topping-out ceremony for a 3-class modular elementary school with a sports hall in Lichtenberg
As part of the Berlin school building offensive, a topping-out ceremony for the new construction of a modular primary school with a sports hall and outdoor facilities can be celebrated again. The topping-out ceremony will take place today in the presence of State Secretary for Tenant Protection and District Development Ülker Radziwill, Norbert Illiges, Head of the School Construction Task Force Steering Group, Michael Grunst, District Mayor of Lichtenberg, District Councilor for Schools and Sport, Filiz Keküllüoğlu, and representatives of the general contractor, Goldbeck Nordost GmbH on the shell of the new school building.
The elementary school at Schleizer Strasse 67 is being planned and built by the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing as administrative assistance for the Lichtenberg district. The pedagogical concept of the compartment school is implemented here.
In contrast to school buildings, which are dominated by long corridors, the main classrooms and division rooms are grouped around a forum room, thus enabling a variety of teaching and learning situations.
Ülker Radziwill, State Secretary of the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing:
“This new school building is the second of its kind and eight more 3-class modular elementary schools will be built by my administration in the near future. It is important to the State of Berlin that our youngest Berliners in particular find good learning conditions. That’s why we pay attention to short construction times and high quality in school buildings, but also in sports halls and schoolyards.”
Astrid-Sabine Busse, Senator for Education, Youth and Family:
“The Berlin school building offensive builds modern, high-quality and fast! This can be seen at today’s third topping-out ceremony for a standard elementary school this year. This will create another school building on Schleizer Strasse based on the spatial concept of the Berlin learning and team houses, the so-called compartment principle. The central cornerstones are the all-day focus, inclusive education and the design of schools as places to learn and live. Flexible and open learning landscapes create the best foundations for contemporary learning and teaching. 432 new places will be created with this new three-stream elementary school in the growing district of Lichtenberg.”
Michael Grunst, District Mayor:
“We have been in the fast lane in Lichtenberg since 2016 when it comes to building schools. We must not let up. I am delighted that we can celebrate another topping-out ceremony for it today. Thanks to everyone involved and above all I wish the people working here on the construction site a quick and accident-free completion and success of their work.”
Filiz Keküllüoğlu, Councilor for Schools, Sports and Facility Management:
“I am very pleased that the construction of this school on Schleizer Strasse is progressing so quickly. These school places are urgently needed in Alt-Hohenschönhausen. A topping-out ceremony is a nice occasion to thank everyone who contributes to the success of the Berlin school building offensive. There is a saying that it takes a whole village to raise a species, and I think the same goes for building a school. I would like to thank everyone involved.”
The basis for the new school building is the design by the architectural office h4a Gessert + Randecker Generalplaner GmbH from Stuttgart. At the end of 2018, the office was the first prizewinner in a design competition for the new construction of 3-stream modular primary schools with sports halls. The specifications for the planning and construction of the new school are the “Standards for the New Construction of Schools” of the State of Berlin. On the basis of the federal government’s Sustainable Building Assessment System (BNB) is certified with the quality level “Silver” – in this context, the energy standards according to KfW Efficiency House 55 are applied, as well as rainwater management, the extensive green roof, photovoltaic systems and the use of sustainable building materials in connection with a recycling concept.
Community facilities and higher-level specialist rooms are located on the ground floor of the school building, while the general classrooms and other specialist rooms and the administration area are arranged in compartments on the three upper floors.
The building technology on the roof area is surrounded by a recessed privacy screen. The roof areas are extensively planted and equipped with a PV system. The school is barrier-free. The also barrier-free sports hall, which can also be used by clubs outside of school, consists of three hall parts, a spectator gallery and a reception and meeting area on the ground floor.
The modular structure of the school building and sports hall enables the general contractor Goldbeck Nordost GmbH from Leipzig, who received a framework contract for up to 10 school locations in May 2021 after a Europe-wide, open tendering process, to use a large proportion of the same prefabricated components such as wall and ceiling elements , columns and stair elements, which contribute significantly to a short construction time. The completion of the school building is planned for early summer 2023.
The high degree of prefabrication and the modular design enable fast, economical and sustainable implementation. The total costs for the school including equipment, outdoor facilities and sports hall at this location will amount to around €43.7 million.
