The unique K2 tram is 45 years old this year. It is a two-link vehicle connected by a joint, which went straight to Bratislava straight from the factory. She drove there until 2009, but without passengers. It functioned as a training vehicle for future tram drivers.
Last year, the Bratislava carrier offered it for sale. A Prague transport company showed interest and bought the car for 1,000 euros (roughly 24,000 crowns). In the spring, it will carry passengers for the first time ever.
After the tram was bought by a Prague transport company, he had the car repaired in Brno. That was last October. There he discovered – after the entire car had been dismantled – that the bodywork was badly deformed. They therefore had to replace a large part of the supporting elements. Until then, the car had not undergone any repairs.
The interior of the tram and the driver’s cabin also underwent a complete renovation. The entire repair of the car cost 9.5 million crowns.
according to Jan Šurovský, director of the Prague transport company, they still await the technical K2, test drives and installation of the check-in and information system. In the spring, the car will open to passengers for the first time since its inception.
Tram K2 was the first Czechoslovak articulated tram and was produced until 1983. While this type of tram never ran in Prague due to the very rugged terrain, in Brno they have had extensive experience with it since 1966, when the first prototype was launched. Over 130 of them ran in the city and several of them are still in operation today.
The tram was derived from the T3 type, which spread to all operations in Czechoslovakia and also to a number of the former Eastern Bloc.
