Houses from the 3D printer in Austria – overview
In Austria, the number of house construction projects has been steadily increasing in recent years. This is a trend that can be observed in many parts of Europe and reflects various factors. An important factor was cheap credit and the desire of many people for a better quality of life.
However, supply chain problems and high inflation are putting a spanner in the works for many builders. Costs have risen sharply in recent months and many people are looking for cheaper construction methods. 3D printing is repeatedly mentioned as an alternative in the media.
There are more and more companies and projects worldwide that aim to 3D print houses. In Austria, too, there are now companies that have implemented 3D-printed houses.
COBOD and PERI
One of the pioneers of 3D printing houses is the Manufacturer COBOD from the Netherlands. The company has various international partners who use 3D printing technology. One of the partners is Peri. As part of a cooperation with the construction company Strabag, a 3D-printed building has already been built in Austria manufactured.
Concrete 3D and Baumit
Concrete 3D, a company from Vorarlberg, has specialized in 3D printing of concrete. As the company itself explains on its website, it offers 3D concrete facades and concrete furniture 3D printer. In addition, the company offers CForm recess system. The recess system for the construction sector replaces the conventional, time-consuming formwork variants. As a built-in element in the prefabricated part or directly on the construction site in the wall and ceiling formwork.
In 2019 we have for the first time reportedthat the Austrian company Build with relies on 3D printing with concrete with the BauMinator brand. With the BauMinator system, components, objects and shapes between 50 cm and 5 meters in size can be printed. Whether precast concrete parts, pipes, shafts, fence elements, outdoor furniture, decorative or art objects.
Wienerberger
Normally, when houses are 3D printed, walls are built up layer by layer with a concrete mixture. The Austrian brick producer Wienerberger is taking a different approach here showed the structure of a brick house with a construction robot from Fastbrick Robotics.
At the end of 2018, Wienerberger signed a multi-stage partnership agreement with FBR (Fastbrick Robotics) to develop an innovative method for laying bricks with robots. Only a few months ago the first model house could be built in Australia.
Price of a 3D printed house
As with other construction methods, the price of a 3D printed house varies greatly. So it depends on the size, that material and the location. The first commercially sold 3D printed house was sold in the US for $300,000 sold. It was built using SQ4D technology and has a living area of 130 square meters.
outlook
Building houses with 3D printers is still in its infancy. Although there have been several successful projects in the past, most of these are prototypes or showcase projects. Although 3D-printed single-family houses have already been sold commercially, there is not yet widespread availability. At present, one normally has to rely on conventional house construction.
According to analyses, 3D printing of houses should be a thing in the next 10 years become a billion dollar business and could thus become one of the most important branches of 3D printing. We have an overview of the most important companies in the industry summarized here. About myths of 3D printed houses we have enlightened here.
