Decline in biodiversity remains a problem in the canton of Zurich
The Zurich building department still sees a great need for action in the fight against climate change and for biodiversity.
The 2022 environmental report also mentions nutrition and nitrogen as problems.
The consumer area of nutrition is a burden environment stronger than mobility, for example, said construction director Martin Neukom (Greens) in a video for the report published on Friday, December 9, 2022.
This because a third of the produced Food ends up in the garbage and the production, especially of animal food, needs a lot of resources.
Biodiversity has continued to decrease
Nitrogen production is also problematic. Agriculture is responsible for two-thirds of this through the use of fertilizers, said Neukom.
As a result, the diversity in poor meadows decreases and trees become more susceptible to storms or drought, according to the report.
Biodiversity has continued to decrease. Even in the case of non-endangered plant and animal species, the number of individuals is falling.
The canton is trying to counteract this problem with networked living spaces, among other things.
Change is clearly noticeable
Of the change is clearly noticeable, Neukom records in the video. The canton of Zurich is therefore sticking to the goal of net zero by 2040.
The energy law adopted by the electorate, which bans new oil and gas heating systems, is an important step, says Neukom.
The environmental report of the building department is published every four years.
