A fire broke out in the Herrengasse in Salzburg’s old town on Thursday night. According to the police, the tenant fell asleep with a burning candle. Operations in the narrow streets of the old town are a challenge for the professional fire brigade.
The fire broke out on the ground floor of a residential building in the narrow Herrengasse. The professional fire brigade was alerted at around 3:00 a.m. Neighbors and residents were already outside when the emergency services arrived to instruct them. Getting there and extinguishing the fire in the city center are always a challenge for the emergency services, says operations manager Armin Barbeck: “The problem is the narrow streets and the parked cars. Neighbors and residents did the right thing here – they closed the apartment door immediately after discovering the fire, so there was no smoke in the stairwell.”
Tenant: Forgot on candle and fell asleep
A burning candle is believed to have started the fire in the home. According to the police, the 21-year-old tenant said he forgot to blow out the candle and fell asleep. The fire brigade quickly got the fire under control and extinguished it. The young man was taken to the hospital on suspicion of smoke inhalation.
