Gebrüder Weiss is now generating solar power in Switzerland
Altenrhein / Lauterach, December 8, 2022. Gebrüder Weiss is increasing the use of regenerative sources to supply its logistics terminals with energy. In October of this year, the international transport and logistics company put its latest photovoltaic (PV) system into operation at its Swiss location in Altenrhein. The system has an installed capacity of 270 kW peak and saves 20 tons of CO2 per year. For comparison: This output could supply almost 55 single-family houses with electricity.
“The roof of the logistics center is ideal for generating solar power. With the new PV system, we can cover around 40 percent of the site’s electricity requirements,” says Oskar Kramer, Country Manager Switzerland at Gebrüder Weiss. There are already plans to expand the system next year and to build a PV system at the Basel site.
With the latest expansion, Gebrüder Weiss is one step closer to its environmental goal of achieving CO2 neutrality in its logistics facilities by 2030. Where technically feasible, the logistics company is successively converting the power generation in its facilities to solar energy. Solar power systems are now standard in new buildings. 21 such PV systems are already in operation at several locations in Austria, Germany and Switzerland and save 1,100 tons of CO2 annually. These existing systems currently cover ten percent of the total electricity requirement in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
