Green-Red insists on Veloroute 6: The basic problem is Onay’s election promise
Controversial: Alte Bemeroder Straße will be part of Veloroute 6 from 2023. This will eliminate parking spaces.

Hanover. Veloroute 6 now leads to the Hanoverian district of Bemerode via Alte Bemeroder Straße. The green-red council majority in the building committee decided so – and thus conceded a different decision by the district council of Kirchrode-Bemerode-Wülferode. There, the CDU, FDP and SPD wanted to leave out Alte Bemeroder Straße because residents and business people are concerned about economic disadvantages if cyclists prefer to use the street from 2023.

There had also been criticism of the route worked out by the city administration in the distant town hall in other districts, such as in Wülfel or Bothfeld. There, too, residents had complained that a cycle route through narrow streets contained many sources of social conflict, for example due to the lack of numerous parking spaces. They are already scarce in Hanover anyway.

Basta politics of green-red leads to frustration in the district
The basic dilemma of these premium cycle routes is that they are an election promise made by Hanover’s Lord Mayor Belit Onay (Greens) and therefore have high political priority in City Hall. In this respect, there was no alternative to the decision to route via Alte Bemeroder Straße – any change, no matter how small, in the route would have deprived the Veloroute project of its importance.
But the bottom line is that the basta policy of green-red in the town hall not only leads to frustration in the district. It also creates new conflicts of interest. Pedestrians, cyclists, cars: the triad of users on Alte Bemeroder Strasse, which was previously amicable, has become unnecessarily imbalanced.
