This was the record of this Pope speaking to Portugal – Observer
1 A long time ago I read a sentence by Virginia Woolf that challenged me so much that since then I have used it as a commandment and an inspiration. The writer said that “nothing happens until it is told”. In fact, what would the things of life and the things of the world be without accountants?
So, days after seeing Pope Francis’ interview, Paulo Portas asked me with a decided “this is going to be published, isn’t it?”. I hadn’t thought about that, in fact I hadn’t thought about anything other than being able to be ready to sit down in front of the successor of St. Peter, in a room in the Vatican. Once the interview was done, I thought I had thought of everything.
Did not have. And it was then that João Amaral also appeared on the scene at the same time, talking to me about making a book and evoking publishers, and it was then that Guilhermina Gomes entered the scene. And suddenly there was an inspired quartet that no one joined and that without ever talking to each other at 4 or even 3 was ready for this book. The role of each one was very different, the commitment, the same.
I left with doubts about the undertaking: television was one thing, a book another. However, when I read the interview for the first time – that is, paying attention only to the words – I immediately realized how it was almost like a flowing river… panoply of moments: moments of reflection, of faith, of sanction, of proclamation, of light, of promise and challenge. But also moments of humor and also moments of great surprise.
