Romania has started sending natural gas to the Republic of Moldova
Romania has started transporting natural gas to Moldova, which is struggling to meet energy demand amid the war between Russia and Ukraine. Gas began arriving on December 3 through a pipeline connecting Iași, in eastern Romania, to the Moldovan border town of Ungheni, state news agency Agerpres reported, citing Romanian gas distributor Transgaz.
The 43-kilometer pipeline, inaugurated in 2014 to reduce dependence on supplies from Russia, has not been used until now. The Republic of Moldova connected it in 2019 to supply Chisinau, and the compressor stations were commissioned in 2021.
Gazprom raised the immediate threat of cutting off gas supplies to Moldova
At the end of November, Russian gas producer Gazprom (GAZP.MM). manage to make the agreed payments.
Gazprom has accused Ukraine of withholding gas supplies passing through the country – something on its way to Moldova denied by Kyiv – and has said it may begin cutting those flows.
