Letter to the editor – Liechtenstein is more reliable without casinos!
In view of the danger that the casino glory could be over in five years, politicians WILL never tire of straining the narrative of the reliability of the business location. Lobbyists could not defend the casino sector more fervently than the Economics Minister in particular does. In doing so, she overlooks fundamental mechanisms:
• Politicians made a mistake when they opened the floodgates completely without any possibility of hedging. The casinos, for their part, have irresponsibly exploited the situation, operating wildly and turning much of it into gambling dens; they are partly to blame for the misery.
• Not correcting a recognized error pays off. False pride costs a lot and has long-term consequences.
• The casinos constantly write about cut-throat competition. It is obvious that tactically they consciously kept various positions occupied, only to sometimes drop them again later with the pretext that the market would regulate itself. They were only concerned with long-term concentration on the best places for a concentrated, much higher gross gaming revenue.
• It is well known that casinos generally have a questionable reputation; Much is in the gray area. There is a great danger that companies from other sectors that would like to settle in Liechtenstein will be deterred by this situation.
• Just as casinos have the right to withdraw, the state has a legitimate right to withdraw if its beliefs change.
If we no longer have casinos, it will add value to our reputation. For this we are recognized by other countries and awarded with respect and trust.
