EuroMillions: the jackpot of 143 million euros won in Belgium
It’s a sacred jackpot that has just been won in Belgium, at EuroMillions, this Tuesday evening: 143 million euros! The winning combination was 12, 20, 25, 26, 27, with two complementary numbers, 8 and 12. The sum is enormous, but in reality, it is not even in the top ten of the biggest wins in the history of this European lottery. The record – 230 million – had been pocketed in the United Kingdom last July, and today, the Française des jeux has now set the ceiling for the maximum jackpot at… 240 million euros.
Of all the countries participating in the EuroMillions, Belgium is not among those who win the jackpots most often: 40 lucky winners since the start of the game, against, for example, 118 in France, 114 in Spain or in the Kingdom -United.
9000 years of Smic
Still, with this sum, the prospects are numerous. In terms of football, the winner of the jackpot could pay 3 and a half times the goalkeeper of the Belgian selection, Thibaut Courtois (bought 40M€ by his club, Real Madrid, in 2018) – considered by some to be the best in the world, although eliminated of the World Cup in Qatar, with his team, in the round of 16. A sum which also corresponds to more than 9000 years of Smic, which is fixed around 1300€.
The winner has sixty days to report to the FDJ and collect his check. In most cases, the lucky ones prefer to lead a completely secret life when they get the loot. During a workshop organized in July by the company and dedicated to the financial support of the “big winners”, which we were able to attend, most of the winners of large sums – more than a million euros – at the Loto or the EuroMillions had explained that they had not even spoken of their gain to their relatives, not even their children. “If one kid knows it, everyone will know it. I’m afraid that we stigmatize them, that we bother them. Fear of kidnapping, too”, explained for example Élise, a mother, lucky winner of 2 million euros at the games. Her husband Renaud, he put forward “a question of values”, refusing that his children “play at the new rich”.
If the gain is not claimed in due time, these 143 million euros will be reversed by the FDJ in various other prize pools, as is the rule in Tier 1 wins, ie when the winners have all the right numbers on the first try. Note that the unclaimed sums in rank 2 and the following, the big winner is… the State, via the Public Treasury, to which the FDJ reversed… more than 220M€ between 2020 and 2021!
