Report from the store opening in Zurich

Sugar Mizzy December 6, 2022

In today’s guest article, our reader Gereon reports on the opening of the first LEGO store in Switzerland, which opened its doors on November 24th in the “Glatt” shopping center. We thank Gereon very much for his contribution and hope you enjoy reading it.

LEGO has always had a presence in Switzerland, even as a major production site until 2005. After that, the LEGO logo disappeared from the map – until today. With the opening of the first LEGO store in Switzerland, the company is back in a form that makes fans big and small particularly happy. On November 24th, the group opened the first location in “Glatt”, which is located near Zurich and is one of the largest Swiss shopping centers.

This premiere had great appeal to the German-speaking community. It has an impact beyond the Swiss borders, at least as far as Frankfurt. Those who were there two hours before the opening to secure a “ribbon” for the first time slot were correct. Many were expecting a boring wait, instead the queue turned into a stimulating fan meet-up.

The boss of LEGO GmbH Karen Pascha-Gladyshev, who is also responsible for Austria and Switzerland, opens the store together with the employees.

After the countdown, the LEGO Group representative ‘cut’ the ribbon, befitting their rank, with scissors constructed from LEGO. The first Swiss LEGO Store thus brings longer, physical access to exclusive sets. So we were finally able to take the boxes in our hands and, among other things, see a day before the start of sales how the Eiffel Tower as a finished model knows how to impress with its dimensions and attention to detail.

Of course, there are also beautiful decorations to admire in the store, such as a mosaic picture made of more than 48,000 LEGO elements, which is inspired by the picturesque old town of Zurich and shows the Limmat and the Grossmünster.

As you’d expect, the Swiss store also has a pick-a-brick wall as well as a minifigure tower. Its theme is wintery, appropriate to the season. Of course, the matching Christmas elements are also available.

basic data

Address:

Smooth Shopping Center
Neue Winterthurerstrasse 99
8304 Wallisellen
Switzerland, Canton Zurich

Sales area: 240sqm

Opening hours: Mon-Sat, 09:00 – 20:00

arrival

The Glatt has an optimal motorway connection to the A1, the multi-storey car park offers 4500 free parking spaces. But it is also very easy to reach by Glattbahn, tram and S-Bahn as well as by bus, which stops right in front of the main entrance. You can find more detailed information on the mall’s website.

Conclusion

The Zurich store is bright and spacious. It is well integrated into the shopping center, so it is probably worth traveling from further afield. Parents can browse extensively through the lovingly designed building corner for the little ones. For me, Switzerland’s first brand store is a real highlight that encourages me to stop by regularly. LEGO is happy to see this as a start and implement further projects in all language regions of Switzerland.

Thanks again to Gereon for this report. Now it’s your turn: Have you already been to the new LEGO Store in “Glatt” and how did you like it? What does it mean for you as Swiss to (finally) have your own LEGO Store? Are you planning a holiday near Zurich and would you like to visit the store in this context? Feel free to exchange ideas in the comments.
