Refugee policy in the municipal council: Urgent GR motion against container village

Sugar Mizzy December 6, 2022

The municipal council meeting on 15.12. from 9 a.m. the stage will be without a pre-Christmas or Advent mood. Heated discussions are guaranteed. Whether the application for new elections, which was submitted by the NEOS and will be voted on in this session, or the now urgent application by the FPÖ against the planned container village.

INNSBRUCK. The last municipal council this year promises high tension and a heated battle of words. After the decision of the municipal supervisory authority and the withdrawal of the change in the municipal rules of procedure, Mayor Georg Willi had to accept a wide range of criticism from the other municipal parliamentary groups.

“Based on this statement by the municipal supervisory authority, I will withdraw the change in the municipal rules of procedure, but at the same time I will do everything possible to ensure that ongoing operations in human resources do not come about,” said Mayor Georg Willi.

Criticism and demands for resignation

“Now Willi has to backtrack, take back his party tactics and withdraw the sole amendment to the magistrate’s rules of procedure that he caused. That’s a resounding slap in the face that Willi received from the municipal supervisory authority of the Tyrolean state government.”soGR Andrew Wanker.
“At this turning point in city politics, the mayor has to take a quiet hour – without his numerous advisors – to assess for himself to what extent his actions still correspond to the values of good governance.”
explains GR Luke Krakl.
“The mayor’s approach is reaching its limits. After a majority decision in the municipal council with an instruction to the mayor, he has to withdraw his changes to the municipal rules of procedure! It is now a matter of putting a stop to further solo attempts and restoring an orderly operation of the town hall.”emphasizes GR Benjamin Plach.
“It is now a question of pulling together and working through the many years of neglect by the mayor and his predecessor‘ said G.R Mesut Onay.
“We expect more from a mayor who claims to represent green values. In the end, actions speak louder than words”so GR Thomas Lechleitner.
“With the decision of the supervisory authority, an unspeakable political farce has finally come to an end. And it was about time”is GR Thomas Mayer glad that Willi’s unspeakable activities have been put to an end.
“Georg Willi’s mumbling about must finally come to an end. Mayor Georg Willi, redeem Innsbruck from your incompetence and resign!”calls for council Gerald Depaoli.
“The backroom politics of the Greens are over. What remains is a massive damage to the image of the city of Innsbruck, for which the mayor alone is responsible with his fantasies of omnipotence, and has to take the consequences. It’s over”so Vice Mayor. Markus Lassenberger, who repeatedly demanded the resignation of Mayor Willi. From this point of view, the discussion and voting on the application for new elections submitted by the NEOS receives a special political note.

refugee policy

How will Innsbruck deal with refugees? After the presentation of the planned measures for refugees by LHStv. Georg Dornauer and Mayor Georg Willi, who announced not only the container village but also the expansion of the accommodation options in the Hotel Europa, there were political reactions. In an answer to an FPÖ municipal council request, the following is stated, among other things:

“The Tyrolean Social Services GmbH (TSD) reports for October that a total of 1,280 refugees are accommodated in the Innsbruck city area. Of these, around 675 people come from the Ukraine.”

Regarding costs, the following is stated: “So far, all costs in connection with the accommodation have been borne by the TSD or the state of Tyrol or the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services GmbH (BBU).”

Vice Mayor Johannes Anzengruber commented on the expected project: “I will keep a watchful eye on ensuring that the security concept for the city of Innsbruck presented and promised by LHStv Georg Dornauer is implemented to the point and comma. The residents around the asylum accommodation must also feel safe.” Sharp criticism of the project comes from the FPÖ Innsbruck.

“It is absolutely irresponsible that Dr. Dornauer and Innsbruck Mayor Georg Willi make the Innsbruck population the leaders of this immense refugee crisis, which is bigger than the wave of asylum seekers in 2015,” says Vizebgm. Markus Lassenberger and StR Rudi Federspiel added: “The political competitors must finally recognize that the boat is full, and they must finally realize that they have an obligation to the local population and not the political representatives for young – mostly male – economic refugees and bogus asylum seekers are from Islamic states in Asia and North Africa.”

The FPÖ has submitted an urgent application for the upcoming municipal council meeting. (Editor’s note, the municipal council first votes on the urgency, if the application receives this urgency, it is discussed in the meeting and it is voted on. If the application does not receive urgency, it will only be dealt with in the next meeting in accordance with the rules of procedure This is planned for January 25th, 2023, by then the container village should already be open). In the application, the FPÖ calls for “the planned construction of refugee accommodation in the west of Innsbruck” to be prevented.
