Portugal adds up to the second biggest rout ever in World Cups – Portugal
This Tuesday, the Portuguese football team added the second biggest defeat in its history in the World Cup, and number 1 in knockout games, by thrashing Switzerland 6-1 in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup.
In Lusail, Gonçalo Ramos, at 17, 51 and 67 minutes, Pepe, at 33 minutes, Raphaël Guerreiro, at 55 minutes, and Rafael Leão, at 90+2 minutes, scored the goals for the ‘quinas’ formation, while Manuel Akanji scored the goal of the Swiss, at 58.
The 6-1 to the Swiss is only behind the Portuguese records of the 7-0 of 2010 to North Korea, on the second day of the group stage, and that was the only meeting in the competition in which the Portuguese team scored goals.
Raul Meireles (29 minutes), Simão (53), Hugo Almeida (56), Tiago (60 and 89), Liedson (81) and Cristiano Ronaldo (87) were the authors of the ten who scored what is still the greatest defeat of always from Portugal in World Cups.
Today’s result jumps to second place in the table, surpassing the other Portuguese defeat in World Cups, the 4-0 against Poland, also in the second round of the group stage, in 2002.
A ‘hat-trick’ by Pauleta, who scored in the 14th, 65th and 77th minutes, and a goal by substitute Rui Costa, current president of Benfica, in the 88th minute, sealed Portugal’s victory, which was of no use, face to 2 -3 with the United States, before, and 0-1 with the host South Korea, later, at the close of the group stage.
In World Cups, Portugal, which today reached 61 goals, in what is its eighth presence, does not boast any more goals – victory by more than three goals difference.
Even so, the formation of the ‘quinas’ has a game with five goals, when, in 1966, in the debut, they beat North Korea by 5-3, after being losing by 3-0, in a game in which the’ king’ Eusébio achieved a ‘poker’.
With today’s triumph, Portugal set the meeting in the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup with Morocco, which today eliminated Spain in the tiebreaker for large debts (3-0, after 0-0 in the 120 minutes).
