The San Marino Declaration contains eleven foundations for sustainable urban design and architecture, which represent a sort of “Hippocratic oath” for urban planners and operators. These principles were symbolically signed on 3 October 2022 in San Marino by Norman Foster, Stefano Boeri and the representatives of the architectural orders of San Marino, Rimini and Pesaro who undertook to disseminate the contents to fellow designers in Worldwide.

With this conference Triennale Milano and the European Economic Commission of the United Nations (UNECE) want to expand the reflection started in San Marino and contribute to the dialogue between planners and urban operators on the theme of the principles of sustainable development of urbanization.

The appointment at the Triennale Milano brings together Italian mayors, property and development managers, university professors, architects and engineers to discuss how the various stakeholders can take charge, in their own roles, of implementing the foundations contained in the Declaration. The meeting focuses in particular on the theme of climate neutrality, of Principle F, according to which “cities, urban infrastructures and buildings should be designed and upgraded to minimize the associated climate footprint, through the adoption of creative solutions that reduce pollution and the use of energy; phasing out unsustainable mobility systems; using modern, energy-efficient and climate-neutral systems; that green energy generation systems are integrated into city projects and buildings”.
