Lyon is not immune to the decline in school enrollment. At the start of the 2022 school year, the city lost 901 students in the first public degree – for 55 closed classes and 17 open. Slightly weaker than in 2021, this drop nevertheless confirms a trend that has lasted since 2020. A phenomenon set to continue, according to Philippe Carrière, academic director of the national education services of the Rhône (Dasen). “We expect to lose another thousand students in Lyon in September 2023. Across the department, we expect 20,000 fewer children in kindergarten and elementary school in the next seven to eight years.”
