One of the seventeenth-century Genoese masterpieces, the Adoration of the Magi by Grechetto which is located in the church of San Luca, now makes use of a new lighting created by Francesco Murano, one of the most important Italian designers of lighting for art.
On the occasion of the beginning of the Christmas holidays, a Genoa there Spinola Foundation presents the new lighting of one of the masterpieces found in the city, theAdoration of the Shepherds from Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione said the Grechetto (Genoa, 1609 – Mantua, 1664), found in the church of San Luca and is now illuminated by the lights of Francis Murano, one of the most requested Italian lighting designers at the service of art. Wednesday December 7th at 5.30 pm, after the pre-holiday mass, the canvas will be illuminated for the first time by the new lights and art criticism Giovanna Rotondi Terminiello will conduct an in-depth reading of the painting illustrating the work to those present. After that, fromDecember 8th to the January 6, 2023 the shovel will be constantly illuminated and visible to all in its new guise.
The work, kept on one of the side altars of the church with a single nave, is among the highest achievements of the Genoese Baroque, which is why it was loaned to the Scuderie del Quirinale for the exhibition Superbaroque. Art in Genoa from Rubens to Magnasco ended on July 3 last year. In Rome it was illuminated for the first time by Francesco Murano who oversaw the lighting design for the entire exhibition. The surfacing of all the details of the painting and the peculiarities of the work done in Rome meant that the Spinola Foundation commissioned Murano the new lighting project for the work once it returned to its headquarters, inside the church of San Luca.
“At first the work was illuminated from the front”, declares Francesco Murano, “with two focuses of light coming from the top of the church. The result was problematic for a frontal view of the painting due to the reflections that were produced on the canvas. Through the technique of filling out this problem has been solved and the seven shapers that now illuminate The Adoration of the Shepherds, in addition to eliminating all the reflections of the oil paint, fill out every detail of the enormous masterpiece, allowing a perfect overview right from the entrance to the Church”.
To see it, the church of San Luca is open from Monday to Saturday from 8 to 12 and from 15 to 19, Sunday from 8:30 to 12:30, and then, only for the duration of the mass, from 16:30 to 18 .
