Hanover. In the future, customers will no longer be able to withdraw cash at almost all Sparkasse Hannover ATMs between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. at night. A spokeswoman for the bank justified the new regulation, which should apply “until further notice”, on Monday with the strength of machine demolitions in Germany by criminals. The recommendations of the Federal Criminal Police Office and the police in Lower Saxony are followed with the restriction. The Sparkasse at the main train station and at the airport make exceptions. There, the devices could continue to be used at night, it said.

Security should be improved
With the restrictions, the savings bank wants to reduce the risk of their ATMs being blown up. The criminals are mostly active at night when they can act unobserved. The spokeswoman explained that the blocks for issuing money after 11 p.m. were not yet technically set up at all locations of the public bank. But this should now be done step by step.

In Lower Saxony, too, more and more ATMs have recently been blown up. At the end of November, the State Criminal Police Office reported around 60 blasts this year. Since 2015, the numbers have increased approximately, the authority reported. In mid-May, unknown persons devastated a savings bank branch in Altwarmbüchen. “The damage was immense,” said the spokeswoman for the money house.
Interior Minister increases pressure on industry
Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) recently accused the credit institutions of “inactivity” – would formally invite criminals. He called on banks and savings banks in Germany to better protect the devices. By April 2023 at the latest, the industry should be mentioned to the Conference of Interior Ministers (IMK) and the Federal Ministry of the Interior to improve the security of ATMs, said Pistorius.
