In Luxembourg: Free transport, slate of 800 million for the State
Since March 1, 2020, public transport is free in Luxembourg, whether trams, trains or buses, throughout the national territory. A measure which, if it delights users, residents or not, also strongly impacts the coffers of the State.
Thus, in the total 2023 budget for Mobility and Public Works, which amounts to 2,818 billion euros (compared to 2,509 billion in 2022), free transport comes to 799.7 million, i.e. 110 million more than in 2022 (689.9 million). Rail alone will mobilize 524.1 million euros, including 283.3 million for infrastructure projects, according to figures presented by Minister François Bausch on Thursday in the Chamber. In addition, 279.5 million euros will be devoted to roads, made available by the Roads Fund, and 326 million for state buildings. Finally, the extension of the tram network will have a budget of 52.5 million euros in 2023, including 25 million for the construction site of the Howald interchange and the redevelopment of rue des Scillas.
François Bausch insisted on the impact of rising construction prices and raw material prices on state-funded projects. Moreover, the question arises whether the budget thresholds for public projects should be reviewed.
