Bite Back discovered action against animal consumption in Antwerp
On the Operaplein in Antwerp, animal rights organization Bite Back staged a campaign on 4 December to draw attention to ‘the victims of the animal industry’. Bite Back complains that millions of animals are killed every year in our country for food, clothing and other consumption and argues that people don’t give it enough thought.
At the peaceful action, a dozen activists lined up with placards with slogans such as ‘Know who you eat’, ‘Choose veganism’ and ‘Stop speciesism’ (the certainty that the life of animals is worth less than that of humans, ed.). Bite Back focuses on this promotion and mainly towards the consumer and not the animal industry itself.
“Who’s on your plate?”
“Every year in Belgium, more than 310 million animals die in slaughterhouses because we as humans want to eat their meat or eggs or drink their milk,” says Sara Surinx of Bite Back. “We’re standing by these individuals throughout this action because others don’t. We’re asking that people decide who’s on their plate.”
Against the “suffering” of animals
Bite Back also provided an information stand where you could get information about the life (and death) of animals in the pet industry. The animal rights organization denounces the killing of animals as such, as well as the living and slaughtering conditions.
Bite Back also sold basic pastries on Sunday, as an example of how to live well without animals suffering. “We will show that things can and must be done differently,” says Surinx. “By tasting vegan pastries, you know that you can also eat well as a vegan.”
