Berthold demands more money for refugees
timeline
The Deputy Governor Martina Berthold (Greens), who is responsible for the asylum system, is demanding more money from the federal government for private refugee accommodation. At the moment there are too few offers, criticizes Berthold.
The employees in her department are tirelessly looking for quarters – but with the current price increases, offers from private individuals are rare, emphasizes Berthold. Because Salzburg is currently only meeting 71 percent of the refugee quota, exhibition hall four is being prepared for the care of asylum seekers. The state has to invest 26,000 euros a month in rent for exhibition hall four. In addition, there are operating and care costs, which are still being negotiated with the Red Cross, says Berthold.
Up to 200 male refugees are to be housed in the exhibition hall. The plan is to move them quickly to permanent basic service quarters or to house them with private individuals. A single asylum seeker currently receives 150 euros a month from Caritas as support for rent and living expenses – private accommodation providers then receive the rent directly from the asylum seeker.
“Federal government must increase daily rates”
In times of massive price increases, the offers for living space are rare under these conditions. This problem exists in all federal states, says Berthold. “All federal states are of the opinion that the federal government must increase the corresponding daily rates and also the start-up financing. Because we need more financial opportunities in the countries to create quarters so that we can better care for people who are fleeing.”
Almost 4,000 people are currently in basic care in the country. Salzburg currently fulfills the refugee quota planned for the federal state at 71 percent.
