Weather: Belgium placed on yellow alert
MRI warns of slippery conditions
By The editorial staff with Belga
LA melting snow appeared on Sunday afternoon in the far south of the country, forecasting the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM). The maxima varied between -1 and +2°C south of the Sambre and Meuse furrow, and around +2 or +3°C elsewhere, under a moderate wind. The area of precipitation will extend in the evening towards the rest of the country, the bulk concentrating on the Ardennes.
During the night, snow will also begin to fall in the lower regions of Namur, Luxembourg and Liège. It will accumulate on the heights and will reach up to 5 cm. The mercury will freeze at -1°C in the Hautes Fagnes and will rise timidly to 0°C or 1°C in the center, or even 2°C or 3°C in the north. Snow can take priority over ice, warns the MRI. The IRM therefore advises motorists to be vigilant because the roads will be slippery.
During the night and Monday morning, the melting snow could turn into wet snow, especially in the provinces of Hainaut, Flemish and Walloon Brabant and Limburg, with accumulations of up to 5 cm in places in the worst case. In West and East Flanders, mainly light rain and melting snow are expected. On Monday, milder air will gradually slide over the country from the northwest. The snow will then change to sleet and rain and the snow cover will change again.
Monday will be draped in clouds, then snow. In places, a snow cover of up to about 5 cm could form by Monday morning. On Monday, it causes snowfall for a long time and the snow cover will reach 5 to 10 cm. In Lower Belgium, discounts are a little more uncertain. First we expect rain and melting snow.
