Antimicrobial resistance: Greece is in the eye of the cyclone
According to the impressive data presented at an event of the AmKE “CARKINAKI”
By 2030 up to 24 million people could be at risk of extreme poverty due to the effects of antimicrobial resistance in human health and food systems, while by 2050, 10 million deaths per year from infections resistant to common antibiotics, antivirals and antiparasitic drugs may reach, as the WHO warns. These were the main messages of the online informative discussion organized by AmKE Karkinaki on limiting the use of antibiotics.
The president of EODY, professor, spoke about the situation in Greece Theoklis Zaoutis, who stated that our country remains in the first places in the consumption of antibiotics, while identifying the problem in the social factors and in the culture of the Greeks and warned that “we must look carefully at the relationship between doctors and patients and the relationships between health professionals”. In the same climate, Mr Ioannis Kopsidas, Chief Infection Prevention Specialist, Researcher, Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist of the CLEO Center, noted that every day we have a patient with a nosocomial infection in hospitals. The event took place with the kind support of the companies MSD Greece and Pfizer Hellas and the organization was managed by the company TBC MON IKE.
