the last stage will start from Monaco to reach Nice
CYCLING – For the first time since 1905, the last stage of the Tour de France in 2024 will not end in Paris. Two days after revealing that the large loop will end in Nice due to the organization of Olympic Games in Paris the same year, the organizing committee announced that the final stage of the race, an individual time trial, will start from the principality of Monaco on Sunday 21 July.
The director of the Tour, Christian Prudhomme, announced it this Saturday, December 3 alongside Prince Albert II of Monaco, without however giving any details on the route or the length of the stage.
The Principality, where many stars of the peloton reside, such as the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, hosted the Grand Départ in 2009. It was already an individual time trial at the start and finish in Monaco. The Swiss Fabian Cancellara won and donned the first yellow jersey of this edition.
A departure for Spain in 2023
In 2024, it will be the first time that the Tour has finished in a time since the legendary outcome of 1989 when the Frenchman Laurent Fignon lost the yellow jersey by eight seconds, the smallest gap in history, against the American Greg Lemon.
Next year, in 2023, the men’s Grande Boucle will start on July 1 from Bilbao, Spain, and end on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on July 23. The runners will cover 3,404 kilometers in 21 stages and will notably cross the five major French mountain ranges (Pyrenees, Massif Central, Alps, Vosges, Jura).
The second edition of the Women’s Tour will start from Clermont-Ferrand on July 25, ending in Pau, after 1,000 km of racing.
