Hundreds of people show support for the Iranian population on the ULB campus in Brussels
A hundred or so people gathered on Friday at the Solbosch ULB campus, opposite the Iranian embassy, to show their support for the young Iranians fighting against the Iranian regime.
Annemie Schaus, rector of the Université Libre de Belgique (ULB), and Pieter Ballon, vice-rector of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), were present. The ULB and the human rights organization Amnesty International had issued a call to gather.
“We see suitable arrests, assaults, murders and torture every day,” said Ramin Atash, professor at ULB. Belgian politicians “are falling for their lack of response to Iran on the international scene, while France and Germany have already officially declared their support for the Iranian people,” the criticism read.
On the lawn of the university, the demonstrators captured pictures of people killed by the Iranian regime. They hoist a banner depicting 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in front of the Paul Janson Auditorium, the university’s largest auditorium. Amini died in September after she was arrested by the vice squad for wearing her headscarf incorrectly.
A booth was set up in front of the auditorium with posters depicting the courage of Iranian women to confront the repressive regime. Under cries such as “Woman, life, freedom”, the rally followed with the release of balloons in the colors of the Iranian flag: green, white and red.
