Christmas market Frankfurt (Oder) 2022: Advent in St. Marien offers light spectacle – thousands of visitors expected
The Christmas market in the St. Marien Church in Frankfurt (Oder) is something very special for many visitors. Countless LED lights create a mystical atmosphere in the nave. Vendors offer handicrafts and delicacies.
It’s that time again this weekend (December 3rd/4th) and next weekend (December 10th/11th). The Advent market in St. Marien is then open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Beforehand, organizer Michael Thieme and lighting designer Robert Haag are busy with the finishing touches. The wooden stands are already there, and fir branches and trees adorn the area. The next day, the dealers will take up positions and decorate, says Michael Thieme. “In the evening there is a last light test.”
43 dealers and thus “noticeably fewer” than before this year. He lists the reasons: there have been business closures, staff and goods shortages and long-Covid cases among dealers. Most of them come from Frankfurt (Oder) and the surrounding area – Poland is also among them.
Michael Thieme is happy that after a two-year Corona break, the contemplative event is finally going on again. Around 9,000 visitors came over the two weekends in the past. Appears again this time with great encouragement. “People should be happy and enjoy the pre-Christmas period.”
Advent mood is not only in the nave of St. Marien. The Oderweihnacht on Brunnenplatz is still open, daily at least from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. until December 22nd. Sunday shopping (December 4th) will also attract many visitors to the center, with numerous retailers in and around Karl-Marx-Strasse taking part. The SMC is also open on the day from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and also attracts visitors throughout the weekend with a small Christmas market including Santa Claus.
