Created in 2018 in Paris by three partners with degrees from HEC and Polytechnique, the start-up Veesion offers gesture recognition technology on video content. The goal: to detect shoplifting in real time.
With a commercial offer introduced in 2021 and continued growth thanks to a fundraising of 10 million euros carried out at the beginning of 2022, the start-up Veesion currently has more than 2,000 points of sale who are followers of its software. , in more than 20 countries.
Based on artificial intelligence and machine learning, its implementation on the video surveillance system of signs reinforces the performance of security guards and that of employees.
Veesion’s technology analyzes the images of live security cameras, identifies suspicious gestures and when the software detects a theft, it then sends an alert to connected devices (computers, tablets and mobile phones). In the event of an alert, security guards can intervene with supporting visual evidence.
Two shops in the Luxembourg station district won over
Among the conquests, France of course, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Brazil, the United States and now… Luxembourg. One more beacon to be placed on the map of the territories annexed by the entrepreneurs, with two businesses seduced by the concept “in the district of the Luxembourg-City station”, according to information distilled by Thibault David, one of the co-founders of the Parisian start-up.
Food, pharmacies, cosmetics, clothing, electronics, DIY… The solution can be adapted to any type of point of sale in the retail sector.

“We offer our solution everywhere in Europe, in direct sale or through partners. Our main targets are businesses, because they apply equally to all shoplifting. You should know that today, less than 5% of thefts are detected on the sales floor, and security budgets tend to decrease. In a difficult economic context since covid for traditional retail players, the safety/security department is perceived as a simple cost center when it can in fact generate multi-purpose savings for brands.
A technology that can be used for several uses
If for the moment the AI developed by Veesion is intended to be installed in establishments subject to shoplifting, in the near future, it could be used for other purposes. “Technology allows many uses and the goal is to confine ourselves to what can be useful to the user and to people.”
Thus, we could see Veesion establish itself in autonomous stores (Amazon Go type), but also in public places, “to prevent malicious acts or in the moderation of video content”.
It is of course not insignificant to film people, but when our system intervenes, it is because cameras are already installed.
Thibault David, co-founder of Veesion
According to the company’s three founders, Thibault David, Benoit Koenig and Damien Menigaux, “the system may soon be able to analyze the consumer’s purchase actions when filling their basket and automatically calculate the amount they owe payer”.

Moreover, it is not excluded either to see the concept being declined on the building sites or in the factories. “Our AI could learn to recognize and observe the right gestures for certain difficult jobs, in order to be able to warn if a person may be able to bless themselves,” explains Thibault David.
“It is of course not insignificant to film people, but when our system intervenes, it is because cameras are already installed. Ultimately, this could even save lives if an isolated person has a bad fall or becomes unwell. The AI would immediately send an alert so that the person could be rescued.”
A far cry from the menacing “Big Brother is watch you” maxim in the book 1984 of George Orwell in short, because if it were in the future, then it would really be for your good.
