Too warm, too sunny, too dry: That was the November weather in Hanover
Two-part weather: In the middle of the month, rain clouds rolled in, like here at the Maschsee in Hanover.

Hanover. At the moment it’s gray and overcast, the sun is barely in sight, and every now and then a few drops fall from the sky. Typical November weather. But overall the weather in the past few weeks has not been typical. November, which is now coming to an end, was too warm, too dry and too sunny. This means that the worrying trend of the past few months is continuing in what is actually a typical autumn month.

The average temperature in November this year in Hanover was 7.4 degrees, measured at the station of the German Weather Service (DWD) at Hanover-Langenhagen Airport. That is 2.4 degrees more than the long-term average. The situation is similar at the other DWD station in the Hanover region, in Barsinghausen-Hohenbostel. There, an average of 7.7 degrees is calculated. That is 2.5 degrees more than the long-term average.

Much more sunshine than usual
That’s still not a record temperature. In 2009, meteorologists recorded the warmest November since weather records began in Hanover, with an average of 9.2 degrees.
The high temperature this November is also reflected in the number of hours of sunshine: At the airport, the sun shone for a total of almost 80 hours in November, an increasingly high value – it means around 150 percent of the average number of hours of sunshine in November.
It remains too dry: there is also a lack of water in the Oderteich in the Harz Mountains.

Split weather
Actually, the November weather this year was divided into two. November 2022 had started with summer jacket weather with relatively high temperatures around 15 degrees and high and clear days. From the middle of the month the weather changed. The sun seldom appeared, the temperatures dropped, and from November 18 there were even four nights of night frost. And it rained every now and then.

But overall it was way too dry. In Hanover this November, just 17 liters per square meter fall – that corresponds to only one third of the long-term average rainfall in November. It looks a bit better on the Deister in Barsinghausen-Hohenbostel. The German Weather Service measured 29 liters there, which is around half of the average November rain.
Exceptional drought in the Hanover region
Of course, this affects the floors. Anyone who is still making the final preparations for winter in the garden can get muddy feet. But this is not the case everywhere. As in the past few months, the drought monitor of the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Leipzig has determined an exceptional drought for the northern parts of the Hanover region – this is the highest level of drought. And that is likely to remain a major problem.
