More severe colds, only a few CoV
Health
Doctors say a multiple cold wave is also spreading in Salzburg – much earlier and more severely than in other years. In addition to the classic flu, there are also the “respiratory syncytial virus” (RSV) and the rhino virus. Babies and young children would be hit harder. CoV is rare.
Up to 100 young patients with a runny nose, cough, sore throat, fever or respiratory diseases come to the practice of pediatrician Holger Förster in the city of Salzburg every day. The causes are often influenza and rhino viruses – the serious pathogens that cause severe colds. There are only a few CoV cases left.
In adults, the viruses mentioned often only cause harmless colds, but they can be more dangerous for infants, according to the pediatrician Förster.
Christmas breaks the waves
This year it’s much earlier than usual, says the pediatrician. In other years, the Christmas holidays interrupt the infection process because many families stay at home and do not spread the virus as often. Föster advises getting vaccinated against the flu and wearing masks again in public spaces and public transport.
