More and more bicycle parking spaces in West
Amsterdam is a cycling city. The bicycle keeps our city accessible for a very long time. Bicycles contribute to a cleaner and liveable city. To encourage this and to ensure that everyone can park their bicycle quickly and safely, we are avoiding bicycle parking as much as possible.
In November we started working on the Overtoom. We have created 196 bicycle parking spaces and 8 scooter parking spaces there.
More bicycle parking spaces
We have also done this in other places in the West district. Instead of 21 car parking spaces, we have now created a space for 264 bicycles.
Including in the James Cookstraat, Van Beuningenstraat and Van Speijkstraat. In the Van Speijkstraat near house numbers 114-116, for example, 2 car parking spaces have been removed. As a result, there is now room for 36 bicycles and the sidewalk is more accessible.
A car-free city
Public space in Amsterdam is limited. We want to make public space attractive and use it as best as possible. That is why we remove car parking spaces and create extra bicycle parking spaces and, if possible, we also plant greenery there. This makes it easier and safer for cyclists to park their bicycles and there is more space on the sidewalk to walk, relax and play.
