It’s official: from 2023 San Marino will be at the start of the Billie Jean King Cup
The San Marino Tennis Federation has formalized the registration of the women’s team in the next edition of the Billie Jean King Cup, the new denomination of the former Fed Cup. From next year, therefore, for the first time San Marino will be able to field a team in the world championship which is the is the women’s equivalent of Davis Cup, where the FST has been participating continuously since 1992.
“We are really proud to be able to take this step and to be able to debut in the Billie Jean King Cup – comments federal president Christian Forcellini -. Giving life to a deep-rooted female movement was one of the objectives we set ourselves with the creation of the Federal Tennis School of San Marino. While we have been participating continuously in the Davis Cup for thirty years, the most important men’s team competition in the world, at the women’s level we have had excellent players in the past, but never a team that could be the expression of a movement. The excellent work of recent years has led us to fill this void and to be able to count, now, on a large number of athletes, also in perspective”.
As proof of the quality of the work done, from today Serena Pellandra will be engaged in a national gathering aimed at the best in her category in Formia, as had already happened before her in Talita Giardi. Having two athletes among the best at national level, in such a short time, is a result that few clubs in Italy can boast.
