Candidate for US ambassador in Prague Sabet presented his possible priorities to the US Senate | iRADIO
Complete the sale of American F-35 fighter jets to the Czech Republic, help American energy investments on Czech territory and honor the legacy of Václav Havel. These are some of the priorities of a possible future ambassador of the United States in Prague. President Joe Biden’s nominee, Bijan Sabet, said this at a hearing in the US Senate that approves nominees, which in this case should be a formality.

Bijan Sabet spoke in the Senate as one of the five potential new ambassadors of the countries of the eastern wing of NATO, and he is the only one of them who is not a career diplomat – on the contrary, the investor, entrepreneur and sponsor of the Democratic Party was a newcomer in this world, and President Joe Biden also received criticism for a similar nomination.
The candidate for US ambassador in Prague presented his priority to the US Senate.
The son of immigrants from Iran and South Korea focused heavily on business matters of his own during the hearing from himself and questions from senators.
As part of the partnership between the two countries in NATO, he wants to support negotiations on the Czech purchase of American F-35 fighter jets. A large part of his hearing concerns energy – Sabet plans to engage in the development of American investments in Czech green and nuclear energy, including small modular reactors. I am talking about this in connection with climate change and the Czech Republic’s efforts to break free from energy dependence on Russia.
Among the priorities of his Prague mission, the candidate for the new American ambassador also ranks support for Czech aid against Russian aggression in an effort to ensure security in our region.
He also mentioned Václav Havel’s legacy – in the area of democracy and human rights, Sabet wants to focus mainly on media freedom and journalistic integrity.
Bijan Sabet promised the senators that he would be interested in how the Czechia is working to fulfill its NATO commitment from 2024 and increase defense spending to at least two percent of GDP.
The Senate should vote on this nomination of President Biden as the new American ambassador in Prague in the foreseeable future, and it is not expected that Sabet will fail as a candidate.

Sabet did not have to face critical questions from American senators. He did not get to speak as much as four of his colleagues, candidates for ambassadors in Bulgaria, Romania, Latvia and Estonia – that is, in countries that are directly or across the sea adjacent to Russia or Ukraine.
Russian aggression in Ukraine played a big role in those heard, and probably the future ambassador to Estonia, George Kent, who previously worked in Ukraine, also testified during the first impeachment of Donald Trump, and Republican Senator Ted Cruz, was now grilling him in connection with the son of President Joe Biden by Hunter.
Sabet avoided such a thing, no one questioned his qualifications and did not mention his lack of experience in diplomacy.
On the contrary, even the opposition Republican senators apparently saw it as appropriate in the fact that he comes from the world of business, and they see the Czechia as a country of business opportunities, perhaps even directly for their state, for which they are elected – this was the case of Bill Hagerty, who directly proposed cooperation between the Czech Republic and his by the state of Tennessee in the field of nuclear energy.
Sabet also called it positive that the current Czech government is critical of China, as is the Senate. He spoke about the fact that it is important for the United States to support economic and academic cooperation between the Czech Republic and Taiwan.
He added that if he is confirmed as ambassador in Prague, Sabet wants to support the Czech Republic’s efforts to resist the “pernicious influence of China”, as he called it.
So he wants to support, for example, the detection of untrustworthy Chinese sales, especially in connection with efforts for cyber security – let’s remember that Bijan Sabet came from a background of entrepreneurs in the technological field or social networks.
