Afrobarometer gets a big boost with $6 million in contributions from Sweden
The Swedish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Sida) has announced a three-year grant of SEK 66 million (approximately USD 6 million) in support of Afrobarometers (https://www.Afrobarometer.org/) new 10-year strategy to expand its reach and illuminate the way forward for Africa’s development. The grant is Sweden’s largest to Afrobarometer since the survey research network was started in 1999.
Sida analyst and deputy head of section Niklas Wu-Hansson announced the grant on Friday on the sidelines of Afrobarometer’s 2022 summer school, which is being organized together with the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
“Sida has been a long-standing partner of Afrobarometer since its inception. We look forward to expanding Afrobarometer’s regional coverage, so that it can continue to amplify the voice of ordinary Africans,” said Wu-Hansson.
The grant will enable Afrobarometer to cover more African countries and fulfill its mission to “make the voice of citizens a key pillar of Africa’s politics and decision-making.” Over the past two decades, the Pan-African Research Network has reshaped Africa’s data landscape by collecting, analyzing and disseminating the aspirations and experiences of African citizens on governance, democracy, gender, environment and other issues. Afrobarometer and its national partners are currently rolling out round 9 surveys in 39 African countries.
Welcoming the grant agreement, Afrobarometer CEO Joseph Asunka said: “This partnership strengthens Afrobarometer’s determination to expand its presence and intellectual leadership on the continent. We are truly grateful to Sida for its continued support and confidence in the work we do. We remain committed to deliver Afrobarometer’s mission and this partnership will allow us to do so and demonstrate the relevance and contribution of our work to Africa’s progress.”
