Frankfurt cult bar Heck Meck is on the verge of collapse
Regulars want to save the cult pub Heck Meck with a petition. Because the restaurant is threatened with a hefty rent increase.
After 37 years, Michaela Schaar, the landlady of the traditional Frankfurt restaurant Heck Meck, is retiring. When the time comes from the end of March, the rent for the restaurant should be tripled.
Schaar’s girlfriend Conni Rädler will actually take over the pub. But she can’t afford the basic rent of 3,900 euros, reports the “Frankfurter Rundschau”. It is said that the costs for personnel, energy and goods are simply too high. Heck Meck is therefore nearing the end. A sale is also possible.
But regular guests want to prevent that and have asserted one online petition started. Politics also gets involved. The Greens and Left in the local advisory board 2 (Bockenheim, Kuhwald, Westend districts) want to prevent the sale with an application.
Heck Meck a place of worship with concerts and theater performances
In 1985, Michaela Schaar and friends took over what was then “Frieseneck”. First just for fun. But over time, the Heck Meck has developed into a cultural venue with concerts, theater performances and pub quizzes.
Around 1,400 people have signed the petition so far. “The Heck Meck has the uniform charm of a lively district pub that hardly exists in Frankfurt anymore. People meet to discuss, to play cards, to karaoke or quiz evenings or just to read the newspaper or have a glass of apple . Here is room for everyone and everyone,” says the appeal of the petition.
A loss of the cult pub “would be a disaster for Bockenheim, another loss of urban diversity”.
