Brussels Region presents new action plan for a cleaner capital | Brussels
BrusselsThe new clean.brussels strategy was approved on 10 November. On Tuesday, competent minister Alain Maron (Ecolo) gave a word of explanation about the new action plan. On the occasion, transparent cubes were erected on the Place Holy Cross, containing “what the inhabitants of Brussels no longer want to see in our streets: litter, illegal dumping, waste, cans and cigarette butts that are carelessly cleaned in the public space.”
The installation has been on Place Holy Cross in Ixelles since Friday 25 November. The volume of 8 cubic meters was not chosen without reason. It represents the volume of litter and illegal dumping collected every hour in the area of the Brussels Region by the cleaning services of the Region and the municipalities.
“With this symbolic installation, we want everyone to become aware of the magnitude of litter and the social and environmental damage it causes,” explained Kathlyn Jaminon, coordinator of the clean.brussels strategy at Bruxelles-Propreté. “In this way we want to appeal to everyone’s sense of responsibility: governments, citizens and companies. This is how we want to remind people that cleanliness in public spaces is a common good and everyone’s business.”
2.5 million euros
On Tuesday, a new representation appeared on the cubes, showing the solutions that clean.brussel wants to provide for this pollution. This strategy encompasses several dimensions: through awareness-raising, prevention, infrastructure and sanctions, they want to make the work of the Bruxelles-Propreté teams easier. “The launch of clean.brussels is an important step,” Maron . “It is the result of a close collaboration that started in 2021 by more than 50 Brussels actors, institutions, associations and individuals.”
“Besides the Region, the municipalities in particular play a key role in keeping the public space clean. To support them in this, the Brussels government has provided a budget of 2.5 million euros. this means that the realized projects can be used for more tidiness in the neighbourhoods. Because by tackling the problems at the root, we can offer all Brussels residents a good living environment, whether they live here, work or come to visit,” concludes the minister.
