Two dead and two injured after stabbings in Brussels, police still looking for two messenger tractors (Brussels)
Three stabbings happened in Brussels on Monday evening in barely half an hour. The police are looking for a man with a knife, who is said to have stabbed two passers-by in the municipality of Anderlecht. Among other things, the helicopter of the federal police is deployed. Remarkably, the Brussels police had to turn out twice this Monday evening, for two different fatal stabbings. The perpetrator of one of them is also still being sought. “There are no indications that the facts are linked or that it concerns terrorism,” said the prosecutor’s office.
The incident in Anderlecht happened around 6 pm, at the lock on the Veeweydekaai. An unknown man is said to have attacked two passers-by with a knife. It would involve a walker and a cyclist. The victims are a 62-year-old man and a 28-year-old man. One of the two victims is in serious condition, according to the Brussels park.
After the stabbing, the perpetrator hit the loop. At 9 p.m., police were still searching for the man. Among other things, the helicopter of the federal police was deployed. “No suspect has yet been discovered,” said the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. “The circumstances of the stabbing are not clear at this time.”
The students and teachers of an insecure school where less evening classes were given were advised by the police to stay indoors. The campus of the CERIA school was searched, as was the underground metro station.
Two more incidents
That same evening, within half an hour, the police had to intervene enough in two fatal stabbings.
At 6:20 pm, the police went to Bethlehemplein troops in Saint-Gilles. A man was stabbed in the street. The 20-year-old passed away. “The public prosecutor’s office is going to the scene with a drop-off team,” said the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. Here too, the police are still looking for the perpetrator, and his circumstances are not yet known.
Around 6:30 p.m., the police were also called to a reception center in the neighboring municipality of Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. Two men had gotten into a fight there, and about a knife. One of them was fatally stabbed. The other was arrested as a suspect, the prosecutor’s office confirmed.
“There is no influence that the facts are linked or that it concerns terrorism,” says spokeswoman for the Brussels public prosecutor Willemien Baert. No police officers would have been killed either. The park has three open openings.
