Toulouse: a historic street in the city center is one-way
Work to make rue du Pont-Saint-Pierre one-way has begun. They will continue until January or even March 2023. A second phase of construction will take place in the winter of 2023. Parking spaces will be removed and islands of greenery will be created.
It’s a small revolution in the urban landscape of Toulouse. Rue du Pont-Saint-Pierre will soon become one-way, as the town hall had announced.
Work began on Monday, November 28, and traffic is already one-way, as it will be definitively by January 2023, in the direction of Saint-Cyprien towards Place Saint-Pierre.
Widening of sidewalks and removal of parking spaces
Workers and construction machinery will widen the sidewalks and remove parking lots on the even side of the road (Dôme de la Grave side). Trees and shrubs will be planted. Eventually, a two-way cycle path will be built on this strategic axis between the right bank and the left bank.
Traffic diversions for motorists coming from St. Peter’s Square
The first phase of the works will thus extend until mid-January, on a first section. For motorists coming in the opposite direction, from Place Saint-Pierre and wanting to enter Saint-Cyprien, a diversion circuit has been set up via Rue Réclusane and Rue Jacques Darré.
The second phase of work will begin in the fall of 2023, with the creation of a two-way cycle path, and the definitive one-way street layout for motorists coming from Saint-Cyprien and heading towards the Garonne and Place Saint -Rock.
Work in phases
“The work is being carried out in phases to avoid congestion in the district and maintain traffic and access to shops, indicates the town hall of Toulouse. The work launched on this artery will improve the conditions of movement for pedestrians and cyclists by offering more safety and comfort. »
The Saint-Pierre bridge was made entirely pedestrian and cycle-friendly last summer, for the duration of an experiment. The permanent pedestrianization of the bridge is granted by the town hall.
The “Right bank, left bank” project of the Toulouse town hall also includes the rue de Metz – Esquirol-Pont-Neuf – République axis.
Two-way cycle path
A two-way cycle path would thus be created, separated from motorized traffic on the one hand, and widened sidewalks, on the other. The consequence would be the removal of certain parking spaces (in particular rue de la République). On the roadway, a lane would be shared by cars and buses between rue de Metz and place Saint-Cyprien, with the bus lane in the other direction.
