Municipality of Anderlecht launches awareness workshops against street harassment | Brussels
AnderlechtThe municipality of Anderlecht will redouble its action against street harassment. That increases governance. In addition to an awareness-raising video and a street art course to raise awareness, workshops for young people are now also being developed on the issue.
The municipality of Anderlecht collaborated with a number of initiatives on the problem of street intimidation. For example, an awareness-raising video was distributed via social media, and there is a street art course to make residents aware of violence against women. Based on the development of the municipal administration, a pedagogical tool for young people.
But now the council wants to go further with a consultation. “We decided to go and find people on the ground, we joined forces with a workshop of artists from Anderlecht to organize awareness workshops with young people,” says Jérémie Drouart (Ecolo), Alderman for Equal Opportunities. “Together they achieve a battle on the theme of street harassment.”
‘NoNoNon’
“The young people also participated in a photo workshop, led by a professional photographer, and complete portraits that will be exhibited in the municipality in January. During the workshop, the young people also had the opportunity to discuss this phenomenon with an event. We want to change mentalities and that starts with our young people,” says Drouart.
December also sees the launch of the ‘NoNeeNon’ campaign in bars and night shops. “It is aimed at both witnesses of sexual harassment and perpetrators and aims to sensitize them. One to take action and the other to address their behavior”, explains Alain Kestemont (Défi), alderman for Prevention. “Intervening and responding is not easy. Many people therefore think that words have no meaning, but it is precisely words that lead to actions,” he concludes.
In addition, the municipality of Anderlecht also joined the regional campaign ‘Join the FAM‘. Furthermore, the label on the doorbell is replaced by a retro-reflective sticker from the campaign. This sticker lets victims who are alone after a case of street harassment of people who feel unsafe know that they can call these people for safe accommodation. The stickers will be added to the December municipal magazine.
