An apartment of just 36 sq.m. in Thessaloniki that fits everything -Designed, all wood
Limited square footage can be addressed in the case of a build, but not a specific one apartment in Thessaloniki.
For the heads of the architectural office Louizi – Louizis ArchitectsEvangelia Luizis and Kimona Luizis, the few square meters and the design philosophy led to a driving force for a creative and functional design.
In fact, the challenge was the size of the apartment itself, just 36 sq.m. With the appropriate, however, he designed and with the originality to separate everything by creating two “furniture” that integrates all the required uses in a flexible way, a functional apartment emerged. The reason for the project entitled Flex / Living.
The limited space ultimately serves the needs of the user while at the same time avoiding the creation of a typical downsized apartment. The above approach was supported through a methodology that redefines the role of “furniture”, imparting the characteristics of the space. This concept of “furniture as architecture” is considered crucial for the apartment in question as this is how the separation of the space was achieved. Meanwhile, the project, beyond a specific solution, also indicates a proposal of an archetypal nature, an example that could be applied in cases of analogous analysis or construction of small countries.
The architect Kimonas Louizis describes “Small (large) space, flexible space, overcoming geometric space. Obvious influence from the matter of an industrial space, mystique manipulation of natural light and automation devices which is enough to ask @Alexa to do it.
The fact that it is an apartment of only 36 square meters was an additional motivation and challenge during the design, how a limited geometric space will exceed the narrow structural limits while at the same time the intentional use of light (natural and artificial) will be reduced to a significant element of its . architectural composition.
The interior space “extends” to the exterior with a single color treatment of the floor, while the creating two “furnitures” that integrate all the required uses in a flexible wayprevent the creation of open – non-functionally active countries and they separate the space into a creation space and a hosting space. Light enters and reshapes the apartment through the variation of its intensity and color rendering. It enters through cracks in the bathroom (interacting with the shower steam) while being reflected and diffused through tinted reflective surfaces (an effect of movement as the day goes on).
In the workplace there are focal points beyond the structural elements of the apartment while the selection of a deciduous tree (ornamental pomegranate) was made with criteria of capturing the changes that take place in nature during the change of seasons. It was a desire to constantly change the user’s experience as the day and time passes.”
Non finito masonry, rustic wood, stained floor, aged brick and the desk made of corrugated sheet metal evoke an antistatic cozy atmosphere with clear references to industrial styles.
In the end, the apartment is an interesting synthesis of contemporary elements and bold additions, which display a unique idiom and give it its special character.
