Modiano Market
The Modiano Market will start operating on December 5. The Modiano Market or stoa Modiano, officially the Central Food Market, is the first covered market in the center of Thessaloniki, built in 1925 to the designs of Eli Modiano and J. Oliphant, in the area of the incendiary zone, which was destroyed by the fire of 1917. Before the fire, the Talmud Torah synagogue was located on the site where it was built.
The construction of the Agora was completed in 1925 and inaugurated in 1930. It was one of the first buildings constructed in Thessaloniki with reinforced concrete and had over 140 shops.
Preserved monument
The building of the Agora Modiano was classified as a listed building in 1983 by the Ministry of the Interior and as a historical monument in 1995 by the Ministry of Culture as “it is a typical example of Agora buildings with a portico”. This unique monument of the modern history of Thessaloniki began to decline in recent years. Food stores gradually began to close, followed by desertification and deterioration, to the extent that in 2017 the building was classified as structurally dangerous. The Modiano Market passed into the hands of Fais Group, in July 2017, with the signing of the contract by TAIPED. It closed in 2019 in order to carry out the renovation work, which was recently completed.
75 small and large businesses will operate in the renovated market and 300 new jobs will be created. The stores have uniform signs and the lighting was handled by Eleftheria Deco. Of the old shops, only one butcher shop will operate.
The Open House
Open House is an international architectural institution that began in 1992 in London as a biannual free architectural guided tour. In Thessaloniki, it has been organized since 2012 by AMKE Open House Greece as a non-profit activity based on volunteering, sponsorships and donations. 66 buildings participate in the program of guided tours that have been taking place since yesterday.
