The shortage of doctors also demands Salzburg’s hospitals
Health
The shortage of doctors also places enormous demands on Salzburg’s hospitals. There is a shortage of 50 doctors in the state hospital and in the Christian Doppler Clinic. In addition, there are significantly fewer regular doctors than system maintainers. The reason for this is the changed medical education.
Night shifts, holiday shifts and outpatient services have in many cases been covered by rotating doctors in recent years, but this has changed since medical education was restructured. In the past, prospective doctors had to complete a rotation for three years and were often also system maintainers in the hospitals during this time.
Basic training instead of rotation
Instead of rotation, there is now basic training in the hospital, which lasts nine months. The young doctors then switch to specialist training. According to the hospital in Hallein (Tennengau), for example, there is a shortage of young doctors. There are temporary bottlenecks, but overall the situation is relatively good.
LKH: The situation is not as dramatic as in Vienna
Regarding the situation in Vienna, where hospital doctors speak of a severe loss of quality in patient care, the state clinics say that the situation in Salzburg is better. The normal working hours for doctors in Vienna are 40 hours a week and 48 hours in Salzburg.
LKH and CDK: 50 doctors are missing
There is a shortage of 50 doctors in the state hospital and in the Christian Doppler Clinic. There are big differences in the subjects: Vacancies in ophthalmology or dermatology are easier to fill, but it is difficult to fill vacancies in surgery because it is a very demanding subject, say doctors.
