“Energy Company of Ukraine” is planning a test import of electricity from Romania
JSC “Energy Company of Ukraine” (ECU) plans to carry out a test import of electricity from Romania.
This was stated by the General Director of EKU Vitaliy Butenko in the weekly information and analytical program of Ukrinform “Actually“.
“We are really starting to test imports electricity from Europe. <...> We also plan to do another test from Romania (because we were from Slovakia before) in order to make sure that it is technically possible to import today,” said Butenko.
He explained that the deliveries of electricity from Europe, which EKU has already made, are not commercial, but rather test. They are enough to make sure of the technical efficiency of the energy system to carry out imports if necessary.
The General Director of EKU is ready that now Ukraine can import 500-600 MW of electricity – for comparison, this is about half of Kyiv’s consumption needs. However, due to the difference in electricity prices in Europe and Ukraine, commercial imports require financial support.
“As far as I know, Ukrenergo, our system operator, is working out the possibilities of the approach, so that it is possible not only technically, but also commercially to ensure imports when they are needed to stabilize the energy system,” commented Butenko.
According to him, Ukraine can technically import electricity from Slovakia and Romania.
As it was related, EKU carried out a test import of electricity for the first time on October 27. The second test import took place on November 19.
JSC “Energy Company of Ukraine” is a state trader in the electricity market. The company conducts operations of purchase, sale, supply and market optimization of electricity consumption for commercial consumers.
