Counseling centers monitor violence against seniors

The senior advice center of the city of Salzburg draws attention to the taboo subject of violence against senior citizens. Again and again it happens that people who are cared for at home with dementia suffer violence. Those responsible are increasingly realizing that caring relatives are often overwhelmed.
Caring for elderly relatives is a demanding task that many people take on at home with a lot of love and commitment in addition to work and family. Above all, dementia and the associated challenging behavior would push some caring relatives to their limits, observe the employees of the senior advice center of the city of Salzburg in personal conversations.
Relatives report on exceptional situations
“Through intensive discussions that we have, subliminal comments often emerge that the relatives are at the end of their strength and they often burst into tears. This emotion is then also used to report on actions where relatives describe, for example, that they pushed or yelled at the mother or locked the person being cared for in the room because they had to distance themselves from the situation for a moment,” says Anita Dietmann from the visiting service of the senior advice service the city of Salzburg.
Lack of staff: Relatives are left to their own devices
The situation is exacerbated by the shortage of skilled workers in nursing. “The retirement homes are affected, as are the social services and day centers can no longer accept new people. The relatives are currently on their own with the moment they need care and there is no relief for them,” says Susanne Mayer-Seeleitner, head of the senior advice center in the city of Salzburg.
Care advice in all districts
In order to avoid overloading, you can initially contact an advice center. Social Councilor Anja Hagenauer (SPÖ) pleads for better support options: “The senior advice is now well known – here a contact visit service is offered that comes home and carries out an initial clarification. Here it is clarified where support can be provided with a mobile care service and how support can also be provided by training courses so that relatives learn how to deal with people suffering from dementia in a course.”
The state of Salzburg also offers care advice in all districts, and here too there are special focal points for dementia.
