With a new record number of visitors, the Zurich careers fair ended successfully on November 26, 2022. During the last five days, 55,947 young people, parents and teachers have visited Switzerland’s largest career choice meeting place in Zurich. At no other event in Switzerland is there so much bricking, chiselling, baking, soldering, hairdressing, mixing, programming or drilling as at the Zurich job fair. The organisers, the Canton of Zurich SME and Trade Association and MCH Messe Zurich, are delighted with the almost 11 percent increase in visitors compared to the last edition.
55,947 people visited the Zurich job fair from November 22 to 26, 2022. Among them were 23,443 high school students from 9 cantons who attended the fair accompanied by their teachers. Compared to the last implementation in 2021, this is 9 percent more students. These figures confirm the great need for the Zurich job fair, which enables direct exchange between professional associations and training companies and interested young people.
Bridging the gap between school and work
The 17th careers fair in Zurich offered a uniform cross-section of the Swiss educational landscape. From A for plant operator to Z for carpenter, 500 apprenticeships, basic and advanced training courses were presented on site, including new professions such as digital business developer, building IT specialist, solar installer and solar fitter. In conversations with professional and industry representatives as well as apprentices, the personal young people in the career choice process gained a broad insight into individual activities, career paths and perhaps also insights into their talents, which they themselves had no idea.
Colourful, interactive accompanying programme
The short lectures on trial apprenticeships, career start from secondary school B/C and topics related to career choice were very well attended. The newly designed guided tours for parents with their children on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons met with great interest. The focus here was on practical apprenticeships with a federal professional certificate. In the application campus, young people could have their own application documents checked, take a professional photo or practice an interview with experts.
Professional championships in the health professions
During the week of the fair, the talented health professionals (FaGe) and specialists (FaBe) from the canton of Zurich and Schaffhausen measured their skills in simulated professional situations. On Saturday, the three best FaGe who will represent the canton of Zurich at the Swiss professional championship 2023 were chosen. The three best FaBe qualify for participation in another national competition in the following year.
Celebrity guests
The opening ceremony with the director of education Silvia Steiner and the professor of economics at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland Mathias Binswanger marks the start of the Zurich careers fair. Both showed the advantages of the dual vocational training system from different points of view – and did not agree on tendencies towards academization. The trade fair week ended with the parents’ event on Saturday, where Niklaus Schatzmann, head of the canton’s middle school and vocational training office, highlighted the advantages of vocational training and the permeability of the vocational training system in Switzerland.
strong partner
The Zurich job fair is organized by the Canton of Zurich SME and trade association (KGV) and MCH Messe Zurich. As the largest employers’ association in the Canton of Zurich, the KGV is particularly concerned with apprenticeships in order to permanently improve the conditions for the SME apprenticeship companies that train 80 percent of the apprentices. The sponsors of the Zurich job fair include the Zürcher Kantonalbank, the Canton of Zurich’s vocational training fund and the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation. Media partners of the Zurich job fair are Energy Zurich and the Tages-Anzeiger.
The next job fair in Zurich will take place from November 21-25, 2023 at the Zurich exhibition center.
