Some drivers in Ile-de-France surely thought they were broke, but that’s not the case. The Crit’air thumbnail is mandatory in the Low Emission Zone (ZFE) of Greater Paris, including electric vehicles. Forgetting can be very expensive…
Circular ban in the ZFE du Grand for Crit’Air 3 postponed
Let’s face it, it is sometimes complicated to find your way around when it comes to bonds in the Grand Paris ZFE. Since June 1, 2021, category vehicles Crit’Air 4 (burgundy sticker) are no longer authorized to travel within the perimeter of the A86 motorway and no longer only in intramural Paris, joining the Crit’Air5.
For Crit’Air 3 category vehicles (diesel engines from before 2011, petrol engines from before 2006), the Greater Paris Metropolis has postponed until July 1, 2023 the ban on driving in the ZFE delimited by the A86. It was initially to take place on July 1, 2022, it was postponed for the first time until the beginning of 2023 before being pushed back again.
But, new report, the new ban date is now fixed in 2024 “after the Olympic Games”, indicated Patrick Ollier on France Blue Paris. However, the decision must still be validated by a vote of the council of the Métropole du Grand Paris.
In 2024, this ban will be extended to the Crit’Air 2 category (all diesels, including the most recent, and gasolines before 2011). The target is 100% clean vehicles by 2030.
Fines of up to 135 euros for lack of Crit’air sticker
In the meantime, traveling in the Greater Paris ZFE with an unauthorized vehicle or without a Crit’Air sticker is penalized by a fixed fine of 135 euros (which may be increased in the event of non-payment to 375 euros) for heavy goods vehicles, buses and coaches and 68 euros (which may be increased in the event of non-payment to 180 euros) for other vehicles.
On its site, the city hall of paris specifies that the presumed offenses (traffic in violation of the restrictions of a ZFE or differentiated traffic; without an air quality certificate in a ZFE or in the event of implementation of differentiated traffic (except for unclassified vehicles ); the affixing of an air quality certificate that does not correspond to the characteristics of the vehicle) may result in the immobilisation of the vehicle.
It is therefore better to pay 3.67 euros for its sticker…
Speed cameras to control vehicles in EPZs
The video verbalization has been delayed but beware, ZFE radars (Low Emission Zones) should soon be set up in some of the largest French cities to control vehicles that carry the Crit’air sticker. The government intends to introduce a “control-penalty” system in the form of an effective radar from the second half of 2024.
“We must do the maximum developed so that the control of the automated sanction is as quickly as possible”, insisted recently Clément Beaune, the Minister of Transport, calling for controls to be carried out in the meantime.
Should we expect gates or cameras to carry out automated checks? The Minister of Ecological Transition Christophe Béchu assured that the “technical characteristics of the selected projects will be presented when they are known”.
By 2025, 43 agglomerations of at least 150,000 inhabitants will be affected.
