Hundreds march in Lisbon in protest to end violence against women
Daniel Cotrim, responsible for the area of domestic and gender violence at the Portuguese Association for Victim Support, stressed the importance of marking the date, because citizens and organizations must have “a word to say regarding these phenomena” and because their combat and prevention depend on each one.
It is necessary, said Daniel Cotrim, to do more, namely from the legislative point of view, where it is necessary to “fine tune some things in the law”.
“And justice, entangled in prejudices, myths, beliefs and stereotypes of sexist society, needs to get rid of them”, he added.
Mariana Mortágua, deputy from the Bloco de Esquerda, also referred to the number of women victims of domestic violence, which is even “more frightening” when one realizes that many of them had already filed complaints, had already been victims of threats and attempted murder.
“Violence against women stems from machismo, patriarchal society, prejudice against women in society”, said the deputy, referring to the existence of a problem of “public policies” and “a judicial structure that is not yet prepared to face this problem with a capacity that deviates from having”.
